Budget Cuts!

Christmas break is over and KnowledgeNow is back with a vengeance. Apparently were cutting $100 billion dollars from the budget this year and guess where 20% of the cuts are coming from? education and transportation, according to Atlanta Journal Constitution.
How does this effect us? Lets bring it local- real close to home.
Hope Scholarship has been cut. What does that mean for us students currently enrolled in school?

Charlette Ives a senior at Georgia State University was finalizing her schedule for her last semester of undergrad. The Hope was paying for her semester as unusual. Everything was good. Then budget cuts were made and things changed. Hope changed some rules around to save some money. Now, any credit hours completed, even if they were paid for out-of-pocket, are considered for the 120 hours that Hope pays for. What does this mean for Charlette? One week before school starts she logs on to Ulearn to find out she owes $2000 plus dollars for her last semester of school. She won’t receive her normal refund to help her pay for books and living expenses. She’s hit with a government-created crisis her last semester of her undergrad!
Let me ask you: are budget cuts suppose to help the economy or hurt the economy?Potentially cutting Charlette off from graduating keeps her from bettering the future by obtaining her education. Like she said herself: do they want us all to be on welfare or what?

Take a minute to think about better ways our government can cut back on spending?
If you have some good ideas, take a minute to blog here or better yet, write a letter to your representative. Did you know it only takes three connections with your representative, whether in-person, by mail, or by phone for she or he to know you by name. That’s how minimally our representatives are contacted!!
Happy Wednesday!
